Manuqalo Komaitai, representing the Vodafone Fijiana rugby team, has emerged as a nominee for the prestigious British Army Sportswoman of the Year award, signifying her rapid success in the rugby arena both within the Army and internationally with Fiji.
Originating from Bau Island in Tailevu, Komaitai’s rugby journey began just three years ago in 2020. Despite her relatively recent introduction to the sport, she has made a substantial impact, excelling in the Army Rugby Union 7s series, and representing teams such as London Irish RFC and York Valkyrie RLFC. Her stellar 2024/25 season featured an outstanding performance as the number 8 for the Army XVs in the Inter-Services Championship. Notably, Komaitai demonstrated her abilities with a remarkable four-try game against the RAF.
Her ascent from a beginner to an international competitor is nothing short of inspirational. In May 2025, she joined the Fijiana national team, making her mark with a try in her debut against Tonga. Komaitai continued to excel in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Challenge and played a pivotal role in Fiji’s Rugby World Cup campaign, delivering crucial tackles, strategic passes, and scoring a try.
Komaitai’s achievements will be honored at the British Army Sports Awards on November 20.
