Rising concerns regarding rehabilitation and recidivism have led the Fiji Corrections Service to strengthen its commitment to restorative justice through a renewed partnership with the Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding. A formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed this week at the Corrections National Headquarters in Suva, aimed at expanding collaborative programs that foster reconciliation, healing, and rehabilitation within correctional facilities.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Sevuloni Naucukidi, highlighted that this partnership, originally forged in 2009, has been instrumental in transforming the lives of inmates and preparing them for successful reintegration into society. He emphasized that the updated agreement serves to enhance efforts to mend relationships between offenders, victims, and their communities.
Florence Swami, Executive Director of the Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding, expressed optimism about the collaboration which aims to deepen peacebuilding initiatives while also providing critical training for corrections officers in implementing restorative justice practices.
This partnership puts a key focus on rehabilitative methods reflecting similar efforts from past initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for inmates, particularly young offenders.
