Fiji’s Ministry of Health is enhancing its vigilance in light of a rising number of measles cases in neighboring Australia and New Zealand. Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, emphasized the importance of maintaining Fiji’s measles-free status, a significant achievement that has been officially acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO).
To safeguard this accomplishment, the Fiji Centre for Disease Control is ramping up public awareness efforts, increasing scrutiny of border entries, and meticulously tracking any suspected cases reported from nursing stations, health centers, and subdivision hospitals. Dr. Lalabalavu stated, “It’s not just about an achievement; it’s to ensure that we continue to monitor that we do not get any new cases of measles in Fiji.”
While acknowledging the WHO recognition as a notable milestone, the focus remains steadfast on protecting public health and preventing any resurgence of measles in the island nation. The proactive measures being implemented highlight Fiji’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of its citizens amid rising health concerns in the region, showcasing a determined effort to prevent the reintroduction of measles and maintain public health safety.
