Fiji Boosts Market Inspections This Festive Season to Protect Shoppers

The Consumer Council of Fiji is increasing its market inspections this festive season to safeguard shoppers and promote fair trading practices. CEO Seema Shandil has reported that the council has already conducted 100 inspections, expecting a rise in consumer complaints post-Diwali as shoppers become aware of issues with their purchased goods.

Shandil highlighted persistent problems, such as the sale of expired products, tampering with expiry dates, fungal growth in pre-packed perishables, damaged packaging, and misleading advertisements, particularly concerning undisclosed promotional validity periods. To date, the council has issued nearly 15 warning letters to businesses found in violation of regulatory standards.

Emphasizing the significance of ethical business practices, Shandil noted that responsible behavior fosters customer loyalty. Trade Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica echoed this sentiment, urging consumers to be vigilant while shopping and for businesses to maintain fairness in pricing. “Let the festive spirit be accessible to everyone,” he remarked.

Both the Consumer Council and government officials are advocating for heightened awareness and ethical trading throughout this busy season, aiming to protect consumers and reinforce trust between shoppers and retailers.
