The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is making significant strides in enhancing border security with the establishment of a new canine facility in the Northern Division. This initiative comes in response to recent major drug busts, highlighting the ongoing threats that Fiji faces in terms of illicit and smuggled goods. FRCS Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh emphasized the need for a collaborative approach among various agencies and stakeholders to combat these threats effectively.

The expansion of the Dog Detector Unit to Savusavu is a key aspect of this initiative, aimed at reinforcing security in maritime areas. Singh stated that the new facility will facilitate better coordination with several government bodies, including the police, water police, the Navy, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This collaborative effort is expected to create a more unified front against those attempting to breach Fiji’s borders.

In addition to the canine facility, FRCS is also working on the establishment of a container examination facility to enhance non-intrusive inspection capabilities. This will be complemented by the procurement of advanced surveillance and monitoring equipment to improve risk detection.

Singh noted that border security remains a significant concern due to the substantial movement of goods and people across international borders. He expressed the need for effective intelligence, risk management, and on-the-ground personnel to rise to the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated criminal activities.

Moreover, the FRCS has recently opened a passenger terminal at Nabouwalu in Bua, Vanua Levu, and is looking forward to establishing similar facilities in other areas, such as Natovi. Singh highlighted the importance of internal coordination among different agencies to ensure that efforts against drug smuggling and contraband are comprehensive.

He reiterated the persistent challenge posed by drugs and contraband entering the country through various channels, including mail, maritime routes, and luggage. As criminal tactics become more sophisticated, FRCS is committed to enhancing its intelligence and targeting strategies, as well as strengthening connections with international agencies to adapt to these evolving threats.
