The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is taking significant steps to bolster border security with the launch of a new canine facility in the Northern Division. This development is in light of recent major drug seizures, underscoring the ongoing challenges Fiji faces related to illicit goods and smuggling. FRCS’s Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh stressed the importance of collaboration among various agencies and stakeholders to effectively tackle these threats.
A major element of this initiative is the expansion of the Dog Detector Unit to Savusavu, which aims to enhance security in maritime regions. Singh highlighted that the facility will enable better coordination with multiple government entities, including the police, water police, Navy, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This united effort is poised to create a stronger barrier against attempts to breach Fiji’s borders.
In conjunction with the canine facility, the FRCS is also developing a container examination facility that will improve non-intrusive inspection capabilities. This project will be supported by the acquisition of advanced surveillance and monitoring technology to enhance risk detection efforts.
Singh pointed out that maintaining robust border security is a pressing concern, given the significant flow of goods and people across international borders. He emphasized the necessity for effective intelligence-gathering, risk management, and trained personnel to confront the sophisticated criminal activities that threaten the nation.
Additionally, the FRCS has recently inaugurated a passenger terminal at Nabouwalu in Bua, Vanua Levu, with plans to establish similar facilities in locations such as Natovi. Singh noted that internal coordination among different agencies is crucial for comprehensive efforts against drug smuggling and the trafficking of contraband.
He reiterated the ongoing threat posed by drugs and illegal goods entering the country through various means, including mail, maritime routes, and personal luggage. As criminal methods continue to evolve, the FRCS is dedicated to refining its intelligence operations and targeting strategies, while strengthening partnerships with international agencies to address these emerging threats effectively. The proactive measures being implemented promise to enhance the safety and security of Fiji’s borders, showcasing the country’s commitment to combatting illicit trade and ensuring a secure environment for its citizens.
