Fiji Blues head coach Viliame Satala is enthusiastic about bolstering his team’s development by participating in more local tournaments following their impressive performance at the recent Rooster Chicken Grassroots Sevens Tournament. Satala believes that increased engagement in local sevens competitions will offer invaluable experience to the younger players on the team.
Reflecting on their recent tournament experience, Satala noted that the competition was a critical avenue for the team to refine their game. He mentioned, “The boys really stepped up after that scare from Dominion. Against Army, they began to find their cohesion and confidence.” This growth was evident as the team worked on specific skills, such as winning back kick-offs, enhancing communication, and improving their defensive structures.
One standout from the tournament was Apimeliki Nasalo, who was named player of the tournament due to his dominant play and ability to disrupt breakdowns effectively. In addition to Nasalo, Satala highlighted the performances of several new players including Isaia Rugu and Esala in the backline, as well as Douglas Daveta and playmaker Etuate, indicating a promising future for these budding stars.
Despite the success of the tournament, Satala remains committed to continuous development, particularly in fostering effective communication among players. He emphasized the importance of communication in sevens, stating, “It binds the team defensively and in attack, especially towards the end of the game.” While he acknowledged that some players are naturally reserved, he has observed progress, saying, “I’m just glad we are gradually hearing their voices more; this tournament has really helped.”
Looking ahead, Satala is optimistic about entering more local tournaments, which he believes will prepare his players for greater challenges on the international stage. This proactive approach signals a hopeful chapter in the realm of Fiji rugby, as the team works diligently to nurture its talented roster.
