The Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s tournament is gearing up for its fourth edition, taking place from January 8 to 10, 2026, in Labasa. Tournament organiser Vika Vataniyaragi announced that the Services Rugby Club in Nawadamu will host the much-anticipated three-day event, promising an exciting showcase of rugby across all divisions.
With enthusiasm building for the tournament, Vataniyaragi expressed her excitement, saying, “We are really looking forward to this tournament and we anticipate three days of exciting competition.” The event will feature three categories: men’s, women’s, and U21 divisions, and teams from around the nation have shown strong interest in participating.
The men’s division has filled all 32 slots, while the women’s category has reached its capacity with eight confirmed teams. In the U21 division, 21 teams are already registered, with only three spots remaining, highlighting the tournament’s growing popularity.
Vataniyaragi, proud to be the sole female organiser in the Fiji Bitter 7s series, emphasized the event’s goal is not just about rugby but also to support community initiatives. The tournament aims to raise funds for two significant projects: the construction of a gym and a community hall for the Nawadamu area. The gym will be accessible to all clubs affiliated with the Macuata Rugby Union, assisting players as they prepare for regional competitions.
“Building this gym will be beneficial at the grassroots level and help in player development,” Vataniyaragi noted. Additionally, plans for a community hall serve a dual purpose. It will not only support local initiatives but also act as an evacuation center during flooding events, which are a concern for the Nawadamu community.
The estimated budget for these ambitious projects stands at approximately $300,000, and the tournament plays a vital role in realizing these goals. With robust participation numbers, a strong community focus, and increasing support, Vataniyaragi is optimistic that the 2026 Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s will be a remarkable event, contributing to both the sport and the community’s welfare.
