Fiji is set to enhance its border security and streamline the travel process as the Cabinet has approved the implementation of two innovative systems aimed at improving the efficiency and safety of entry into the country.
The first initiative, the Advance Passenger Information (API) system, will enable immigration officers to screen travelers before their arrival. As passengers check in at international locations, their basic passport details—such as name, date of birth, nationality, and flight information—will be sent electronically to Fiji. This proactive approach allows authorities to identify potential security or immigration risks ahead of time.
The second system, the Passenger Name Record (PNR), will provide a more comprehensive overview of airline bookings. This includes not only travel itineraries but also contact information, payment methods, travel companions, and booking history. By utilizing this data, authorities will be better equipped to analyze travel patterns and detect any suspicious behavior early on.
Cabinet members emphasized that these two systems complement each other, with the API focusing on who is traveling to Fiji and the PNR offering additional context regarding their travel intentions.
