FIJI Water and Neptune Pacific have made a significant commitment to Fiji’s workforce by announcing a $14 million investment aimed at creating a state-of-the-art career center for marine and manufacturing training at the Fiji National University (FNU) Laucala campus. The initiative was officially launched by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, FNU vice chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, and Craig Cooper, executive vice president of The Wonderful Company.
This innovative career center is designed to address the mounting skill shortages in Fiji’s industrial sectors, particularly in maritime operations and manufacturing. Through hands-on training, students will gain industrial skills and accredited certifications that will enhance their employability and better prepare them for careers in these vital areas. The center is expected to assist more than 400 students over the next decade in bridging the skills gap that currently affects local businesses.
The initiative receives backing from Stewart and Lynda Resnick, who co-own The Wonderful Company and have invested significantly in global education, health, and sustainability initiatives. This underlines the company’s dedication to not only its operations but also to the development of the communities in which it operates.
Professor Nabobo-Baba expressed that this investment represents “a pivotal step toward a brighter future for Fiji,” emphasizing the positive impact this endeavor will have on the local economy. Newly appointed director of the Career Centre, Carol Watkins, will oversee the development of programs that ensure the workforce meets both local and international industry needs.
This investment aligns with earlier initiatives by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited to enhance workforce skills within Fiji, which included plans to replicate successful models utilized in California.
