Eco Guardians Fiji is urging individuals to take responsibility for their litter during New Year celebrations as an increasing amount of rubbish is being observed on popular beaches. Joanna Caine, the organization’s Chief Executive Officer and Project Manager, highlighted a disturbing trend where local beaches from Lami to Pacific Harbour and throughout the Galoa corridor are becoming more polluted, particularly during festive periods.
Caine emphasized that while families are encouraged to enjoy the stunning Fijian beaches, they are often left littered with disposable diapers, plastic bottles, takeaway containers, and food waste. “I saw that the beach was so beautiful and it was clean. But then when there were so many cars parked on the sides… the amount of rubbish that’s on the beach lying around, especially diapers and plastic bottles and takeaway packs,” Caine observed.
The presence of litter not only tarnishes the natural beauty of these locations—a key attraction for visitors—but also poses risks to marine life and attracts stray animals. Caine is calling on beachgoers, particularly those arriving by car, to take their rubbish home. She pointed out that many parents neglect proper disposal methods for diapers and often leave food scraps and barbecue bones scattered on the beaches.
Sixteen-year-old Sailosi Natadra from Wainiyabia, Serua, echoed this concern, noting that the littering issue resurfaces annually. “It’s important to maintain cleanliness, especially along picnic spots. It hurts us, the landowners; it’s an eyesore whenever we see rubbish along shores after picnic outings. Take your rubbish with you, don’t leave it behind for us to clean up. Please dispose of your rubbish properly,” he said.
Eco Guardians Fiji asserts that protecting the environment is a communal responsibility and highlights the necessity for increased awareness during peak holiday seasons when beach visits surge. The ongoing appeal is a hopeful reminder that with collective effort and responsibility, Fiji’s beautiful beaches can remain pristine and enjoyable for everyone.
