Fiji Bati Selection Sparks Debate Over Local Talent Ahead of Pacific Championships

Fiji National Rugby League chairman Akuila Masi has addressed concerns regarding the selection of the Vodafone Fiji Bati squad for the upcoming Pacific Championships. The selection has faced criticism for featuring only one local-based player, Keresi Maya, which has raised questions about the representation of domestic talent, particularly given the disruptions faced by the local competition this season.

Masi clarified that the decision ultimately rests with the coaching staff, primarily based in Australia, who determine player inclusion by assessing their skills, fitness, and team dynamics. He stated, “The way the team is selected is compiled by our national coach together with the coaching team. They assess skill sets, fitness levels and combinations, and ultimately, they are the ones accountable for the team’s performance.”

Additionally, the traditional trial match known as the “Battle of the Bati,” which typically showcases local players against overseas professionals, was not held this year. However, Masi noted that plans are in place to reinstate this match in 2026 to foster a more equitable selection process in future competitions.

Looking ahead, Masi expressed optimism about reassessing the selection criteria after the Pacific Championships, particularly with an emphasis on creating more opportunities for local athletes. The finalized squad of 20 players is expected to be announced next week, generating anticipation for the upcoming matches.

The Fiji Bati’s first challenge will be against Cook Islands Aitu on October 18 at the Santos National Football Stadium, where they aim to build on last year’s commanding 56-6 victory over the same team. Their subsequent match against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls is set for November 1, further preparing them for what is anticipated to be a thrilling Pacific Championships.

The ongoing efforts to incorporate local players into the squad, alongside the strategic goals of the national board, promise a bright future for Fijian rugby league. As the Fiji Bati head into battle, community support will play a vital role in uniting and uplifting the spirit of the sport they cherish.
