Fiji Bati Gear Up for Inaugural Pacific Bowl in PNG

Fiji Bati Ready for Pacific Bowl Clash with Cook Islands Aitu in PNG After Squad Shake-Up

The Vodafone Fiji Bati are entering the final stages of their preparations for their first-ever Pacific Bowl match against the Cook Islands Aitu, scheduled to take place in Papua New Guinea this week. The team touched down in Port Moresby from Australia on Sunday and hit the ground running with their first training session on Monday, intensifying their efforts for this pivotal encounter.

With the squad announcement coming just days prior, several notable adjustments have occurred. Among them, players such as Waqa Blake, Samuela Fainu, Sione Fainu, Jordin Leiu, Meli Nasau, and Sydney Roosters center Mark Nawaqanitawase will not be in the lineup. Nawaqanitawase’s omission is significant, as he has been selected by the Australian Kangaroos for the 2025 Ashes Tour against England, despite being part of the original Fiji Bati extended squad.

Head coach Wise Kativerata is collaborating closely with prop forward and captain Tui Kamikamica, who is currently assessing his options following the expiration of his contract with the Melbourne Storm. Adding to the lineup, Kaiviti Silktails captain Gabriel Tunimakubu has been called up to replace injured player Ben Nakubuwai, along with former Silktails player Akuila Qoro.

Historically, the Fiji Bati have enjoyed success against the Cook Islands, having dominated their last encounter in last year’s competition with a resounding 56-6 victory at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This upcoming match is not just vital for the Bati’s tournament progress; they will also face the PNG Kumuls on Saturday, November 1, in Port Moresby shortly after their clash with the Aitu.

Kickoff for the match against the Cook Islands Aitu is set for 5 pm Fiji time this Saturday. This tournament presents a valuable chance for the Fiji Bati to display their talent while also nurturing future prospects as they build towards the next Rugby League World Cup. The energy and determination observed during their training sessions reflect a team ready to perform, spurred on by the unwavering support of their fans back home. The atmosphere surrounding this match is not only exciting but also filled with hope for a successful showing on the field.
