Fiji’s Bati squad is gearing up for the upcoming Pacific Championships with the addition of Samuela and Sione Fainu, both from the Wests Tigers. Having the option to play for Tonga, the brothers have chosen to represent Fiji, highlighting their commitment to the Fijian team. Their sibling, Latu Fainu, might join them for the Rugby League World Cup next year, although he is currently recovering from shoulder surgery.
This selection bolsters the Fijian presence in the Wests Tigers, which already includes players like Jahream Bula, Sunia Turuva, and newcomer Joese Lanyon. Notably absent from the squad are Wests Tigers captain Api Koroisau, due to unavailability, and Viliame Kikau of the Bulldogs, who is getting married during the tournament.
Winger Mark Nawaqanitawase from the Sydney Roosters could also join the Fiji team if he isn’t chosen for the Kangaroos Ashes tour. Bati coach Wise Kativerata is focusing on the future by integrating new talent into the team, including young players like Kurt Donoghoe, Kitione Kautoga, Caleb Navale, and Jethro Rinakima, who are making their marks in the NRL.
The squad will be led by captain Tui Kamikamica of the Melbourne Storm, who joins after the NRL Grand Final. The games will take place at the Santos National Stadium in Port Moresby over three Saturdays, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions.
Fixtures for the tournament are as follows: Fiji Bati will face Cook Islands Aitu on October 18, PNG Kumuls will tackle Cook Islands Aitu on October 25, and the final match between PNG Kumuls and Fiji Bati is set for November 1.
The Pacific Bowl serves as a crucial preparation stage for Fiji as they aim to build team synergy and momentum heading into next year’s World Cup. This tournament offers not just a platform for competition but also a celebration of Pacific rugby culture, with fans anticipating thrilling athletic performances and showcasing the spirit of the region.
