The Fiji Islands Baseball & Softball Association (FIBSA) has recently bolstered its relationship with Nihon University of Japan through a series of cultural and environmental initiatives. This week, a delegation from the university’s College of International Relations, led by Professor Kazunobu Suzuki, collaborated with FIBSA to plant 100 mangrove saplings along the Maritime School foreshore. This latest effort contributes to a commendable total of 300 saplings planted within the year, reinforcing their commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Nihon University students further engaged with the local community in Raiwai, Suva, where they connected with members of the Eagles Sports Club. The students shared traditional Japanese activities and distributed gifts to children, fostering international friendships through the sport of Baseball5, which they actively played together.
Inoke Nukubalavu, secretary general and development officer of Fiji Baseball, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership transcends the baseball diamond. By combining our passion for the sport with climate action and cultural sharing, we are building a sustainable future for our athletes and our environment.”
Additionally, the delegation visited John Wesley College, where FIBSA expressed enthusiasm over the large turnout of youth from Raiwai, highlighting the initiative’s aim to align athletic development with educational support. The collaboration, which began in September 2023, aims to extend the sport’s social responsibility while focusing on environmental stewardship and community involvement. This growing partnership illustrates a powerful commitment to both sport and the well-being of the community, promising a positive impact on future generations.
