Fiji Bakers to Earn Global Standards Through FMF-Azelis Training Initiative

For many local bakers in Fiji, the scent of freshly baked bread signifies more than just a business; it embodies their livelihood and self-pride. In a significant advancement, FMF has introduced a new training program, in collaboration with Australian partners Azelis, aimed at equipping Fijian bakers with skills that meet international standards while allowing them to thrive in their home country.

The initiative is designed to empower local talent in modern baking techniques, reducing the need for individuals to seek job opportunities abroad. FMF Bakery Manager Sachin Kumar emphasized the program’s commitment to enhancing both the industry and the community, stating that it ensures quality products are crafted by skilled hands within Fiji. “We want to retain our talent here in Fiji and help our bakers produce products that can be compared to what’s found overseas,” he expressed.

Over the coming months, the training will extend its reach to bakeries, hotels, and airlines across various regions, providing bakers from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to learn from experts in the field. Ross Young, Azelis’ Bakery Account Manager Export, highlighted the goal of the initiative: to raise standards and impart decades of knowledge to the next generation of bakers. “Our aim is to transfer our experience from Australia and assist Fiji’s bakers in growing with confidence and producing quality goods,” he said.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts within Fiji to uplift local industries and foster entrepreneurship. Similar projects, like those by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, focus on providing vocational training for individuals, including marginalized groups. These educational opportunities not only empower participants but also promote economic independence and inclusivity within the community.

With FMF’s commitment to developing local talent, the future of baking in Fiji looks promising. As bakers gain new skills and enhance their craft, the ripple effects may lead to a thriving local baking industry that supports families and fosters community resilience, ultimately encouraging more individuals to explore their potential and contribute positively to their local economies. The hope is that as these bakers excel, they will inspire others and drive further growth within Fiji’s vibrant culinary scene.
