Three foreign nationals, Yu Yang Fang, Minghui Dai, and Zhou Lan, have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the unlawful possession of 39.5 grams of methamphetamine. Additionally, Zhou and Dai face further allegations for possessing over $7,000 in both local and foreign currency, which is suspected to be the proceeds of criminal activity. Both are also charged with unlawful supply, while Yu is implicated in possession concerning suspected criminal proceeds.
During the court appearance before Magistrate Vinaina Diroiroi, an interpreter was provided to aid the defendants in understanding the legal proceedings. Although the prosecution did not object to bail, the magistrate highlighted the court’s obligations under the bail act and ultimately ruled to deny bail, emphasizing the public interest associated with the serious nature of the charges.
Shirley Tivao, representing the defendants from SLS Legal, expressed concerns regarding their visas, which are set to expire in November, and the challenges they face while in custody, including difficulties in accessing necessities like clothing due to the lack of family support in Fiji.
The magistrate determined that it was essential to keep the defendants in remand, citing public interest and the gravity of the charges they face. A hearing is scheduled from November 3 to November 5, during which the prosecution is expected to present 16 witnesses as part of the case.
