The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has officially declared that World Boxing (WB) is the recognized international boxing body in Fiji, serving as the exclusive avenue for amateur boxers to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, and Pacific Games. This affirmation comes in light of Fiji’s ongoing discussions regarding re-registration with the International Boxing Association (IBA).
FASANOC’s CEO Vanessa Kilner clarified the situation, noting that the organization adheres to guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which no longer recognizes the IBA. “As the National Olympic Committee for Fiji, we take our cue from the IOC. They recognize World Boxing, and they no longer recognize IBA,” Kilner stated. She highlighted that this decision stems from a series of governance issues concerning the IBA, leading to WB’s emergence as a credible alternative.
Kilner emphasized that Fiji’s decision to align with World Boxing helps establish a transparent pathway for local boxers aspiring to compete in IOC-sanctioned events. “In Fiji, we have chosen World Boxing, and this means that the pathway to the Olympics and other IOC-sanctioned events is very clear,” she explained.
Local amateur boxers who wish to compete in the Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, or Olympic Games are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association to ensure a solid route to these prestigious competitions. Kilner advised that participation in WB-sanctioned events would bolster their chances of success and provide necessary support.
She also urged boxers who have been invited to participate in IBA-sanctioned events or other boxing competitions outside of WB to seek advice from the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association. It’s important for them to confirm whether such participation could affect their eligibility for the Commonwealth or Olympic Games.
FASANOC’s commitment to fostering an effective framework for amateur boxing in Fiji reflects a proactive stance towards ensuring that athletes have the best opportunities to succeed on the international stage.
