The Fijian government has reiterated that there is no plan to discuss succession for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka while the legal appeal process is still ongoing. Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya addressed concerns during a press conference, emphasizing that the focus remains on respecting the judicial process as appeals may take considerable time to resolve in the courts.

Tabuya clarified that the appeal would likely progress through both the Court of Appeal and, potentially, the Supreme Court, indicating that the governing party and the Prime Minister would not make leadership decisions until that process is complete. “There’s no urgency to it because the appeal process will take some time,” she stated, confirming that Cabinet has rejected any suggestions for the Prime Minister’s resignation.

In a show of support, Tabuya noted that there was unanimous backing for Rabuka within Cabinet, underscoring the sentiment that he should continue guiding the country. She emphasized the government’s commitment to the rule of law and the proper separation of powers, asserting that the legal actions taken are fundamental rights under Fiji’s justice system.

Additionally, the People’s Alliance Party (PAP) has expressed unwavering support for Rabuka following his comments implying that resignation could be an option. PAP General Secretary Sila Balawa clarified that these comments were misinterpreted, reaffirming that the party stands firmly behind the Prime Minister amid the ongoing legal proceedings. Balawa indicated that the Prime Minister would act based on legal counsel and maintained that the party intends for him to lead into the next election.

As Fiji approaches an election year, Balawa acknowledged the expected public criticism directed at the Prime Minister, including challenges regarding his age and advice. However, he urged that such opinions often lack a factual basis and stressed the party’s confidence in Rabuka’s capability to lead.

This situation reflects a collective resolve within the governing bodies to maintain stability during a potentially tumultuous period, as they navigate the legal landscape while preparing for future electoral challenges.
