The McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji Sevens tournament serves as a crucial platform for players in the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s extended squad, offering them their final chance to secure a spot in the team for the HSBC Singapore Sevens, according to head coach Osea Kolinisau.
Today, a youthful Fiji Babas team will take the field at this prestigious tournament, allowing emerging talents to face off against elite international competitors. Coach Kolinisau emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, “We’ve selected a young team for the competition because I want to assess the youngsters.” He noted that the exposure to top-tier teams, including the USA, the British Army, New Zealand, and Australia, will provide valuable experience for the players.
Kolinisau expressed his admiration for the dedication and potential of the younger athletes, who have been training diligently and showcasing their skills. “The youngsters in the side have been training exceptionally well. They have been putting their hands up, pushing the senior players, and giving them a good run for their money,” he remarked.
The Fiji Babas are set to compete in pool A against the Seattle Barbarians from the United States, Nationwide Sydney Nadi from Australia, and Police Blues. As they embark on this journey, there’s a sense of anticipation that the young players may surprise everyone with their performance, potentially making a significant impact at the upcoming Singapore leg. This tournament not only highlights the promising future of Fiji rugby but also showcases the depth of talent within the nation’s ranks.
