Fiji and Australia have unveiled a significant governance partnership worth AUD 25 million, aimed at bolstering public sector institutions, reforming civil services, and promoting democratic values. The Australia–Fiji Governance Partnership (AFGP) was launched by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who characterized it as a major milestone in the enduring ties between the two nations.
At the inauguration ceremony held in Suva, Rabuka expressed that the partnership goes beyond a mere program; it embodies a deep commitment to enhancing governance and driving economic progress in Fiji. He highlighted how this collaboration aligns with the country’s ambitions for reform and advancement in crucial governance sectors.
Focusing on civil service reform, economic governance, and the strengthening of democratic principles, the AFGP builds on the achievements of the earlier Fiji–Australia Institutional Partnerships Program (IPP). Rabuka noted the creation of the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service (FLIPS) as an important initiative aimed at boosting public sector capabilities, making them more effective and responsive to the needs of citizens.
Peter Roberts OAM, the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, emphasized that this partnership is a continuation of nearly a decade of collaboration and reflects a stronger commitment to deepening trust and collaboration between the two countries. He acknowledged previous successes in enhancing legislative processes and fiscal transparency through their joint efforts.
Roberts reaffirmed Australia’s ongoing support for Fiji, pledging AUD 25 million over the next four years to assist the nation in achieving its goals of fostering effective, inclusive, and accountable governance. This partnership symbolizes Australia’s dedication to working alongside Fiji in pursuit of shared priorities, which they refer to as “Vuvale,” meaning family.
The AFGP is anticipated to improve collaboration not only between governments but also in crucial sectors such as elections, taxation, statistics, and parliamentary development. Both leaders conveyed an optimistic outlook for the future, as they strive together toward a resilient governance framework that will benefit their citizens while reinforcing common democratic values.
