The Athletics Fiji season commenced with great enthusiasm as nine clubs and six secondary schools converged for an exhilarating competition at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This event, which attracted over 100 athletes, marks a significant milestone for many participants aiming for a place in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Albert Miller, head coach of Athletics Fiji, emphasized the importance of this inaugural competition, describing it as a crucial preparation opportunity for athletes aspiring to take part in prestigious events like the Commonwealth Games, Coca Cola Games, and Oceania Games. “We are trying to encourage the athletes vying for a position in the Commonwealth Games,” Miller said, highlighting the chance for athletes to evaluate their fitness levels and showcase their skills.

The competition included a variety of events such as the 100m, 50m for younger participants, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin, Discus, and High Jump. This comprehensive structure allows athletes to transition back into a competitive environment while gradually ramping up the level of challenge throughout the season.

Among the standout performances, Isoa Vunianamatana made headlines by clearing an impressive two meters in the high jump. Miller noted that this achievement indicates promising progress for Vunianamatana and fuels an optimistic outlook as the season progresses.

With additional competitions scheduled in the coming months, Athletics Fiji is dedicated to offering valuable opportunities for athletes to hone their skills and develop strategies in preparation for the June 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The successful kickoff of this season sets an encouraging tone, motivating athletes to pursue excellence and continuously elevate their performance.
