Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has expressed concern for the future of the country as it faces significant political and economic challenges. In a pointed New Year’s message, Chaudhry warned that growing uncertainty, economic pressures, and governance failures are diminishing public trust in the Coalition Government.

Chaudhry highlighted various issues, including delayed municipal council elections and electoral reforms, which he claims show the Coalition’s lack of effective solutions. He noted that three years have passed with no signs of municipal elections, creating a sense of unease among the populace. The Coalition’s silence regarding proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution has exacerbated fears within minority communities, leaving them feeling unsettled.

The party leader criticized the government’s failure to uphold democratic freedoms, citing issues such as media funding restrictions, the introduction of Online Safety laws, and the proposed Referendum Bill. He remarked that while the government promised a restoration of full democratic rights and freedoms, the outcomes have fallen short.

On the economic front, Chaudhry stated that Fiji’s reliance on external budget support is a troubling indicator of underlying issues, as domestic industries continue to struggle. He pointed to deteriorating public services in hospitals, roads, and water supply systems, which he believes are symptomatic of wider systemic failures. Furthermore, he expressed alarm over the prevalence of corruption, describing a lack of accountability mechanisms, such as a Code of Conduct or an Accountability and Transparency Commission.

Chaudhry also addressed the concerning state of the sugar industry, the ongoing drug crisis, and the decline in rural areas as critical problems that reflect more profound structural challenges. He ultimately called for “bold, decisive leadership,” arguing that Fiji cannot continue down its current path without significant improvement in governance and responsiveness to the needs of its citizens.

His urgent message serves as a rallying cry for change, emphasizing the importance of addressing these pressing issues to restore confidence among the Fijian people.
