President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu officially appointed two new ambassadors during a ceremony at State House, a significant event for Fiji’s diplomatic endeavors. Jesoni Vitusagavulu is now Fiji’s Ambassador to the State of Israel, while Laitia Tamata will serve as Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present at the ceremony, accompanied by the families of both new appointees. Vitusagavulu brings a wealth of experience to his role, having previously served as Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Mexico from 2005 to 2007. During his tenure in Washington, D.C., he successfully led initiatives to rebrand Fiji’s embassy and created opportunities for employment pathways for Fijian workers in Canada, facilitated by collaborations with international foundations.

Prior to this, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau from 1996 to 2003, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing Fiji’s trade and investment activities. His contributions include the advancement of Fiji’s ICT and audio-visual industries through legislative initiatives and infrastructure support. Additionally, he has held various leadership roles, including Chairman of Food Processors Fiji Limited and Chairman of the Agricultural Marketing Authority.

On the other hand, Laitia Tamata, now Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, is recognized for his extensive background in governance and international law. He is a development practitioner and legal adviser whose contributions have significantly impacted development projects across Fiji and the Pacific. Between 1987 and 1988, Tamata underwent training in international diplomacy and protocol with the Fiji Army, prior to his engagement in diplomatic missions. He has focused his studies on crucial subjects such as human rights, juvenile justice, environmental law, and climate change.

The appointment of these two ambassadors is seen as a strengthening of Fiji’s diplomatic representation and is expected to enhance the nation’s engagement across bilateral, regional, and multilateral platforms. This development reinforces Fiji’s commitment to actively participating in global discussions and initiatives, ultimately benefiting the country and its citizens.
