Fiji has officially established a new security agreement with the Solomon Islands, which enables the deployment of Fijian law enforcement and military personnel during high-risk events and national emergencies. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in Honiara on September 9, during the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka articulated that this agreement lays out a structured framework for security collaboration, particularly in light of the Solomon Islands’ upcoming general elections and other crucial national security operations.
Prime Minister Rabuka stressed that Fijian security personnel will adhere to non-political and non-interventionist principles, ensuring complete respect for the sovereignty of the Solomon Islands. He also highlighted Fiji’s historical involvement in regional assistance missions to the Solomon Islands from 2003 to 2017, noting that this new agreement builds upon that legacy and reinforces the strong ties shared between the two nations.
Describing the new security pact as a testament to the enduring relationship between Fiji and the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized a mutual commitment to maintaining peace and fostering cooperation in the region. He pointed out that this partnership aligns with Fiji’s wider foreign policy goals and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
