Fiji has reinforced its commitment to regional unity and shared goals at the United Nations, as highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during a meeting with the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) in New York. Rabuka emphasized the importance of the traditional Pacific approach of unity and cooperation, acknowledging the region’s critical role in influencing global agendas.
The Prime Minister lauded the adoption of new General Guidelines by the PSIDS, which were crafted to enhance collaborative efforts at the UN. He noted, “The PSIDS has historically proven to have leverage in shaping the Agenda of the UN, so we as Leaders including Permanent Representatives here in New York, must remain vigilant in working closely together as a family guided by the Pacific Way.”
Rabuka expressed gratitude for the combined efforts of the group and believes these guidelines will strengthen the PSIDS’s ability to address common priorities at the UN. He also recognized the opportunity for PSIDS to broaden its grasp of global challenges, while remaining true to Pacific principles.
As an informal coalition within the UN, PSIDS brings together Pacific Island nations to amplify their collective voice, reaffirming Fiji’s longstanding dedication to multilateralism. This is reflected in Rabuka’s previous initiatives, such as the “Ocean of Peace” Declaration and regional dialogues focused on development and security.
Through continuous engagement on international platforms, Fiji continues to advocate for peace, environmental sustainability, and regional cohesion. Facing present-day challenges like climate change and geopolitical tensions, the collaborative and united approach endorsed by Rabuka presents a hopeful outlook for the future. This renewed commitment to solidarity and shared values lays a constructive groundwork for addressing global challenges, while preserving the Pacific’s unique cultural and environmental heritage.
