Fiji and Marshall Islands Forge Development Pact to Boost Pacific Cooperation

Fiji and the Republic of the Marshall Islands have reaffirmed their dedication to regional cooperation through productive bilateral discussions at the Pacific Community Conference held in Tonga. Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, and Kalani Kaneko, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Marshall Islands, engaged in talks aimed at enhancing their partnership under the Pacific Vuvale spirit.

The dialogue emphasized strengthening their ties through various initiatives, including training programs, people-to-people exchanges, and economic collaboration, all formalized under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Development Cooperation. Fiji expressed its commitment to advancing these initiatives, while Minister Kaneko conveyed his appreciation for Fiji’s ongoing support, showcasing a positive outlook on the potential for new partnerships to foster mutual growth.

This meeting took place during the 14th Conference of the Pacific Community and CRGA 55, where regional leaders came together under the theme “Pasifiki: Rooted in Heritage, Honoring the Past, United for a Resilient Future.” The importance of such collaborative discussions among Pacific nations is further highlighted by recent engagements between Fiji and other countries, reinforcing the overarching theme of solidarity in facing shared challenges, including climate change and economic recovery.
