Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, recently participated in the Indonesia–Pacific Cultural Synergy 2025 event held in Kupang, Indonesia, alongside other Pacific ministers and cultural leaders. This initiative, fully funded by the Indonesian government, aims to strengthen cultural ties and foster collaboration across the Pacific region.
During this multi-day event, the Fijian delegation engaged in various activities, including cultural exchanges, technical sessions, and bilateral discussions. A significant part of Minister Vasu’s agenda involved dialogues with Indonesia’s Minister for Culture, where he outlined Fiji’s priorities for its iTaukei communities. Key topics included enhancing cultural education for youth, promoting innovation through creative industries and digitization, and exploring collaborative initiatives under UNESCO’s heritage projects.
Minister Vasu also placed emphasis on expanding scholarship and vocational training opportunities in fields such as arts, agriculture, and heritage, which could greatly benefit the youth of Fiji. The discussions extended to restoring visa-free travel for Fijian nationals, allowing for easier movement and cultural exchanges within the region.
As Fiji prepares for its leadership role in the Melanesian Spearhead Group in 2025, Minister Vasu reassured that any new cultural partnerships arising from the dialogue would be brought before the Cabinet to ensure alignment with Fiji’s broader national and regional commitments.
This gathering follows Indonesia’s ongoing cultural diplomacy efforts, highlighted by other recent cultural events that have brought together delegations from across the Pacific to celebrate shared heritage and strengthen bonds. These ongoing initiatives present a hopeful vision for a collaborative future, emphasizing the importance of cultural connections and mutual growth. The commitment from both Fiji and Indonesia to deepen their partnership is expected to enhance cooperation on various fronts, paving the way towards a more unified and prosperous Pacific community.
