Fiji and Germany Expand Cooperation on Climate, Oceans and Regional Security

Fiji and Germany are reinforcing their partnership in addressing critical global challenges such as climate change, ocean governance, sustainable development, and regional security. This reaffirmation of commitment took place during a meeting in Suva between Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua and Germany’s special envoy, Ambassador Dr. Thomas Fitschen.

The discussions followed Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s engagement with Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul at the UN General Assembly in September. Minister Qereqeretabua acknowledged the ongoing support from Germany, particularly in development and climate resilience initiatives facilitated through the German Embassy and GIZ – German Development Cooperation. She highlighted the importance of international partnerships in enhancing Fiji’s national objectives.

“Germany has been a steadfast partner in our development journey. Their support in climate resilience, sustainable development, and regional cooperation strengthens our capacity to address the challenges facing our islands,” Qereqeretabua stated.

Ambassador Dr. Fitschen reiterated Germany’s commitment to Fiji’s development agenda, emphasizing the importance of regional solidarity in fostering peace and prosperity. He remarked, “Our collaboration is built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to sustainable development and climate action in the Pacific.”

The meeting continues a legacy of collaboration between the two nations, celebrating 52 years of diplomatic relations, underscoring their mutual dedication to regional stability and sustainable development.

Recent interactions also reflect this growing relationship. Earlier meetings highlighted Fiji’s aims to expand cooperation in various sectors, including security and trade. Initiatives such as the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue conference, wherein Fiji is represented by key officials, display the proactive steps both nations are taking toward fostering a sustainable and resilient environment.

Overall, this partnership not only celebrates historical ties but fosters hope for a collaborative approach in tackling pressing issues. With ongoing support and dialogue, Fiji and Germany are well-positioned to enhance their cooperation for the benefit of their people and the broader Pacific region.
