Namosi Women’s Rugby Triumph Fueled by Late Mentor Elenoa Kunatuba

Namosi women’s rugby coach Maraia Kasanita has praised the late Elenoa Kunatuba, whom she regards as the pivotal influence in guiding the team towards their recent success in women’s rugby. Kasanita made her remarks following the conclusion of their Marama Cup campaign, highlighting that the team’s achievements owe much to Kunatuba’s vision and leadership.

Kasanita noted, “If we look into the win today, most of these girls were brought into the team by her. I only taught them a few of the things that she (Elenoa) guided me through.” Her reference underscores Kunatuba’s lasting impact on both the players and Kasanita herself, revealing a strong foundation established during her time as a coach.

She expressed that the recent victory was not just a triumph in the tournament but a testament to Kunatuba’s influence. “If there is anyone to credit for the win today, it should be her, for what the girls had learned and also what I’ve learned from her for the past three years before she passed away,” Kasanita stated. Her acknowledgment reflects a deep sense of gratitude for the guidance she received from Kunatuba.

The journey has not been without its challenges; Kasanita recalled the team’s disappointments in previous encounters with Suva, highlighting their determination to overcome past losses. “We lost to Suva last year, we even lost to them this year during the round robin stages. We are so happy for today’s win as we have been trying for a very long time,” she remarked, emphasizing the team’s resilience and newfound confidence.

Namosi’s recent achievements not only honor the legacy of Kunatuba but also signal a promising future for women’s rugby in Fiji. As they continue to build on their success, the efforts of Kasanita and her team inspire hope in the sporting community, showcasing the potential for growth and triumph in women’s rugby. With a strong foundation and motivated players, Namosi could pave the way for more remarkable stories to emerge in the realm of women’s sports.
