Ed Skrein, known for his role in “Jurassic World Rebirth,” has officially joined the cast of Prime Video’s highly anticipated adaptation of the renowned PlayStation video game, “God of War.” This collaboration is a result of efforts by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, bringing the fascinating world of ancient mythology to the small screen.
In the upcoming series, Skrein will take on the role of Baldur, the youngest son of Odin, portrayed by Mandy Patinkin. Although he is the youngest, Baldur is regarded as Odin’s most lethal weapon. With a charismatic yet unpredictable demeanor and a razor-sharp wit, Baldur is a complex character driven by a haunting curse that strips him of the ability to experience pleasure and physical sensation. This curse ignites a deep-seated anger and a thirst for battle, leading Baldur to adopt a ferocious fighting style that leverages his immense strength and fist-to-fist combat skills. His greatest desire is to find a worthy adversary who can reignite feelings he has long been deprived of.
The series, spearheaded by writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore—recognized for his work on “Outlander” and “For All Mankind”—will center on the journey of Kratos (played by Ryan Hurst) and his 10-year-old son Atreus (Callum Vinson). The narrative follows their quest to disseminate the ashes of their beloved wife and mother, Faye. In this poignant adventure, Kratos strives to educate Atreus on the nuances of being a god, while Atreus attempts to guide Kratos towards understanding what it means to be human.
The ensemble cast also comprises Teresa Palmer as Phoebe/Sif, Thor’s wife and the goddess of family; Max Parker as Heimdall, one of Odin’s sons and the Watchman of Asgard; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the formidable Thor; Alastair Duncan, reprising his role of Mimir; alongside Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn as the brothers Sindri and Brok.
“God of War” has been granted a two-season order and is a co-production involving Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in collaboration with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. The executive producer team also features Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, and others, alongside director Frederick E.O. Toye, known for his work on “Shōgun” and “The Boys,” who will direct the first two episodes.
With Skrein’s casting and a solid production team in place, the adaptation of “God of War” promises to deliver a thrilling and dynamic reinterpretation of this beloved video game, captivating both fans and new audiences alike.
