The Fiji Police Force is intensifying its investigation following a major drug bust at Vatia Wharf in Tavua on January 16, which has raised concerns about a possible connection to a significant cocaine seizure in French Polynesia occurring on the same day. The operation in Fiji led to the apprehension of four South American nationals and the confiscation of a considerable quantity of suspected cocaine.
That same day, French authorities intercepted a vessel within their maritime zone loaded with multiple tonnes of suspected cocaine. The timing of these two events has prompted Fijian officials to explore potential links between the cases.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, emphasized the importance of regional and international collaboration to investigate potential transnational criminal connections. Information is being exchanged via the Pacific Transnational Crime Network (PTCN) as part of a broader strategy to combat the rising threat of drug trafficking.
“We are closely monitoring developments, assessing threats across the Pacific, and ensuring no gaps are left in our regional cooperation,” ACP Waqa stated, recognizing the growing concern regarding these issues.
Investigators are probing the possibility that the cocaine seized in Fiji is linked to the shipment found in French Polynesia, as well as the sophisticated methods that might have been used to transport the drugs, including the use of submersibles. The maritime experience of the arrested individuals and any local contacts that might have assisted in the trafficking are also under scrutiny.
ACP Waqa reaffirmed the persistent threat posed by organized crime syndicates in the Pacific, stressing that authorities are approaching this situation with the utmost seriousness. The recent seizures illuminate the rising danger of trans-Pacific drug trafficking; experts warn that Fiji’s ports could draw the attention of criminal networks that may employ advanced smuggling techniques.
In response to this escalating issue, it is critical for authorities to bolster international cooperation and enhance their surveillance capabilities to protect Fiji from the risks of drug trafficking, while ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens. This proactive approach serves not only to counter the immediate threats but also to fortify the regional framework against organized crime.
