Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently honored Fiji’s Chinese community during festivities celebrating two significant milestones: the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese settlers in Fiji and the 50th year of diplomatic relations between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China. Throughout his address, Rabuka recognized the profound contributions made by the Chinese community in shaping Fiji’s economy, culture, and national identity since the arrival of the first Chinese family in 1855.
Highlighting their historical significance, Rabuka acknowledged that the earliest Chinese settlers, notably Moebakling, established themselves as farmers and traders, forming bonds of mutual respect and harmony with local communities. He remarked, “Your ancestors came to Fiji seeking new opportunities and built lives here, integrating well within society. As a result, we enjoy a rich blend of Chinese-Fijian fusion today.”
The Prime Minister noted the evolution of the Chinese community in Fiji, which has transitioned from early agricultural roles to a vibrant presence in various sectors, including education and entrepreneurship. He expressed pride in their resilience and adaptability, observing that each new generation continues to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
Jenny Seeto, President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, echoed Rabuka’s sentiments, emphasizing that the values instilled by Chinese settlers have been passed down through generations. She praised the harmonious interrelationships fostered through intermarriage and community integration, which have enriched Fiji’s multicultural tapestry.
Looking to the future, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with China across various domains, including trade, investment, and climate resilience. He stressed that the relationship is underpinned by “mutual trust, cooperation, and shared values,” highlighting the promising potential for further collaboration.
