The Chinese community in Fiji reaffirms its commitment to fostering a stronger and more prosperous nation as it celebrates 170 years since the first Chinese settlers arrived. This historic milestone was underscored during a recent event attended by dignitaries, including Wang Yuan, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, who emphasized the community’s enduring contributions to Fiji’s development.
“Over the past 170 years, the Chinese community has deepened its roots within Fiji’s multi-ethnic society and created a bridge to China,” Yuan remarked. He called upon both Fiji and China to continue enhancing their bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of their citizens, highlighting the importance of cooperation in areas such as development, culture, and economic growth.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recognized the vital partnership with the People’s Republic of China, noting that this collaboration has brought tangible benefits across various sectors including agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, and health. He mentioned the historical significance of these ties, as Fiji was the first Pacific nation to establish diplomatic links with China, and how this foundation has cultivated a fruitful partnership over decades, especially under initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative.
The resilience and unity of the Chinese community were also celebrated, with local leaders, including Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese Association of Fiji, acknowledging the hard work and perseverance that have characterized their contributions throughout Fiji’s history. Seeto noted that the community has played a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s socio-economic landscape, becoming an integral part of the nation while fostering a sense of inclusion and collaboration among all ethnic groups.
As both nations anticipate significant anniversaries in the coming year—the 50th year of diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of the Chinese presence in Fiji—there is a collective spirit fostering optimism for continued collaboration. The celebrations serve not only to acknowledge past achievements but also to inspire future engagements that promise shared prosperity and cultural exchange.
This ongoing dialogue exemplifies the potential for enhancing cooperation and solidarity, paving the way for a hopeful future as Fiji and China work together towards common aspirations. The resilience and dedication of the Chinese community within Fiji highlight the enduring spirit of partnership and progress that continues to shape the islands’ vibrant cultural fabric.
