The enduring friendship between Fiji and China was recently commemorated as members of the Chinese community in Fiji gathered to celebrate the rich history of Chinese settlement and the significant milestone of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Jeeny Seeto, the President of the Chinese community, reflected on the remarkable journey of the first Chinese settlers who arrived in Fiji in 1855. She emphasized the importance of these pioneers who not only established a vibrant community but also laid the groundwork for the social and economic fabric of modern Fiji. Seeto acknowledged the values of diligence, integrity, and family that these ancestors instilled, which continue to motivate their descendants’ contributions to Fiji’s development.
The Chinese-Fijian community has become a vital symbol of cultural integration, contributing to various sectors, including agriculture, trade, education, and the arts. Over the years, Chinese-Fijians have played crucial roles as professionals and entrepreneurs, significantly enriching the multicultural identity of Fiji.

Seeto noted that over the half-century, the partnership has expanded through diplomatic dialogue, trade, and cultural exchange. She pointed out China’s significant contributions to Fiji’s development, which include various infrastructure projects such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, along with humanitarian assistance.
A recent testament to this collaborative spirit was the arrival of a Chinese naval hospital ship, which provided more than 3,000 medical consultations and performed 400 surgeries, showcasing the deep and enduring friendship shared between the two nations.
Seeto reiterated the commitment of both Fiji and China to further develop their partnership based on principles of peace, prosperity, and mutual respect. The future appears bright for continued collaboration, promising benefits for both communities and reinforcing the ties that unite them.
