Fiji is making strides in climate-resilient infrastructure through a $385 million agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which will fund a significant water security project aimed at modernizing water and wastewater systems. Acting Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad noted that the initiative supports Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025–2029 and the Water Sector Strategy 2050, emphasizing climate adaptation, ocean health, and reliable service delivery. The project is structured to remain within Fiji’s fiscal targets, even as the government navigates a national debt projected to be $11.7 billion by mid-2026.
ADB’s Regional Director, Aaron Batten, emphasized the project’s innovative elements, which aim to efficiently utilize funds, improve quality of life, and bolster regional water sector skills. A notable component of the project is the establishment of a Pacific Regional Water Operators Training Program in Fiji, which will serve as a hub to train water operators across the Pacific, benefiting smaller nations that cannot establish their own programs. This component highlights Fiji’s pivotal role in regional skill development, aligning with similar efforts to reduce water losses in aging infrastructure.
This comprehensive initiative underscores the Fijian government’s dedication to enhancing water access, service delivery, and infrastructure resilience against climate impacts. Beyond immediate infrastructure improvements, the project includes crucial upgrades such as expanding the Kinoya wastewater treatment plant and tackling aged pipe networks, all aimed at achieving long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
