Fiji Airways has unveiled the latest installment of its ‘Meet the Makers’ series, celebrating the artistry of local artisans who enhance the airline’s world-class inflight experience. This edition highlights Sigavou Studios, a family-run studio renowned for its vibrant designs that are prominently featured on the airline’s inflight paper cups.
Maria Rova, the lead artist at Sigavou Studios, emphasized that their artwork draws deep inspiration from Fiji’s rich traditions and natural beauty. “Our process in creating the artwork here at Sigavou Studios honors the age-old practice of masi making,” Rova explained. She revealed that the studio uses handcrafted barkcloth made by family members from the remote island of Vatulele as their canvas, blending it with vibrant, contemporary pigments to create uniquely evolving designs.
Rova conveyed the personal significance behind their artwork, noting that the motifs and colors reflect a profound love for Fiji. “Everything we do is inspired by Fiji’s beauty, culture, and way of life. It’s made with love by a team that’s passionate about what they do,” she shared.
This collaboration with Fiji Airways is particularly special for Rova, who described it as a dream come true for her small studio. “When Fiji Airways asked if we would create art for their new set of onboard cups, we were absolutely thrilled. Our first art studio was our family’s kitchen table, so to see our work flying across the world is beyond what we ever imagined.”
Fiji Airways Chief Customer Officer Akuila Batiweti emphasized that this partnership underscores the airline’s commitment to celebrating local talent. “Every detail onboard our aircraft carries a story, from the meals to the design of a simple cup. Collaborating with Sigavou Studios brings our guests a genuine sense of place and connection, and we’re proud to showcase Fijian artistry at 30,000 feet.”
Moreover, through the ‘Meet the Makers’ campaign, Fiji Airways continues to highlight the skill, creativity, and dedication of individuals who contribute to an inflight experience that authentically represents Fiji. This initiative not only showcases local craftsmanship but also fosters a deeper connection between travelers and the beauty of Fijian culture.
