Fiji Airways has introduced a unique touch to its inflight experience by placing a handcrafted Vau flower on every Business Class table setting. These flowers, crafted from dried hibiscus bark locally known as Vau, symbolize tradition, artistry, and personal stories. The flower-making artisan, Wati Walawala, meticulously prepares each flower by cutting, soaking, and drying hibiscus bark, producing around 500 flowers weekly. Wati, who hails from Lovoni, Ono-i-Lau, expresses deep pride and personal significance in her work, claiming that the small roses she crafts have transformed her life and bring joy to others.
Fiji Airways’ CEO, Andre Viljoen, emphasizes the importance of embedding genuine Fijian spirit and tradition into the airline’s service. The inclusion of the Vau flowers is part of the airline’s broader Meet the Makers video series, highlighting the local artisans behind unique elements that set their service apart.
This latest initiative reflects Fiji Airways’ dedication to enhancing the passenger experience by incorporating cultural heritage and craftsmanship into their offerings. Alongside previous service improvements such as the introduction of a Pacific Rim-inspired menu and environmentally friendly amenity kits, Fiji Airways continues to emphasize its commitment to representing Fijian cultural richness and sustainability in the sky. These efforts collectively highlight Fiji Airways’ aim to provide travelers with an authentic and enriching journey while showcasing the warm Fijian hospitality.
