Fiji Airways has added a distinctive element to its inflight experience, introducing handcrafted Vau flowers as part of its Business Class table setting. These unique flowers, made from dried hibiscus bark known locally as Vau, are not merely decorative but carry deep cultural significance, representing Fijian tradition, craftsmanship, and personal narratives.
The artisan behind these creations, Wati Walawala, hails from Lovoni, Ono-i-Lau, and is dedicated to her craft, producing approximately 500 flowers each week. The process involves cutting, soaking, and drying the hibiscus bark, transforming them into small, elaborate roses. Wati takes immense pride in her work, noting how her creations have positively impacted her life and the lives of others by spreading joy and cultural appreciation.
Andre Viljoen, CEO of Fiji Airways, underscores the significance of integrating the authentic Fijian spirit and tradition within the airline’s services. The addition of Vau flowers is part of their larger ‘Meet the Makers’ video series aimed at spotlighting local artisans who contribute to the unique aspects of their service.
Fiji Airways’ recent move underlines its commitment to enhancing passenger experience by weaving cultural heritage and local craftsmanship into their offerings. This complements past initiatives such as the launch of a Pacific Rim-inspired menu and adoption of eco-friendly amenity kits. Together, these enhancements reinforce Fiji Airways’ mission to provide passengers with a culturally-rich and sustainable travel experience, all while reflecting the warmth of Fijian hospitality.
This initiative not only celebrates the island’s rich traditions but also showcases the airline’s dedication to offering an authentic and enriching journey, positioning Fiji Airways as a carrier that values both sustainability and cultural expression.
