Fiji Airways has introduced a culturally enriching element to its Business Class service by featuring handcrafted Vau flowers on every table. This initiative enhances the in-flight experience by incorporating Fijian tradition and artistry. The flowers, a product of Fijian artisan Wati Walawala from Nukuni, Ono-I-Lau, are carefully crafted from dried hibiscus bark through a meticulous process involving cutting, soaking in seawater, sun drying, and delicate handcrafting. Wati produces 500 of these unique flowers weekly.
The addition of these flowers symbolizes “Uku uku,” a Fijian expression of celebration and connection. Through this symbolic gesture, passengers are offered a deeper connection to Fiji’s rich culture. Wati notes that each flower carries personal significance and adds a touch of Fijian culture that transcends the typical travel experience.
Fiji Airways CEO Andre Viljoen underscores this initiative as a tribute to artisans and a means to weave Fijian values into each flight, enhancing the passenger experience beyond standard expectations. Part of Fiji Airways’ “Meet the Makers” video series, the initiative aims to highlight the skills and stories of individuals crucial to the airline’s world-class service and cultural richness.
This latest addition aligns with previous enhancements such as updated dining options and sustainable amenity kits, showcasing Fiji Airways’ commitment to innovation and cultural integration. By featuring local craftsmanship through the Vau flowers, the airline offers travelers an authentic and enriched experience that reflects the beauty of Fijian traditions and a strong connection to its cultural roots. These efforts emphasize the importance of cultural authenticity in global travel, offering passengers a memorable journey filled with cultural richness and genuine warmth.
