Fiji to Complete 37 New Homes for Cyclone Ana Survivors by Next Year

Fiji aims to finish 37 homes for Cyclone Ana-displaced families by next year

The Commissioner’s North Office in Labasa, in collaboration with contractor Engineering Express Logistics Limited, is making significant progress in constructing 37 homes in Nadoiviri, Dreketi, Macuata. This initiative aims to provide stable housing for families who have endured nearly five years of living in makeshift tents after being displaced by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021.

At a recent Macuata Provincial Council meeting, community concerns about the extended duration of temporary housing were raised. In response, Divisional Planning Officer North, Setareki Dakuiboca, assured both council members and local villagers that the project remains on schedule for completion by next year. He highlighted ongoing efforts to assist families in readiness for the upcoming cyclone season, which is expected to run from November to April. “We are collaborating with contractors to ensure construction work is finalized by next year,” Dakuiboca emphasized, also mentioning the provision of new tents as necessary to aid families in the interim.

Macuata Women’s Representative, Adi Samanunu Katonivere, expressed appreciation for the support from overseas organizations but called for increased collaboration within the province to support women affected by this prolonged displacement. “While we acknowledge the government’s efforts, our primary focus remains on the women and their day-to-day challenges. Life in tents for almost five years poses significant difficulties,” she noted.

In line with the housing project, Dakuiboca announced that the Commissioner’s Office is also launching financial stability initiatives to aid families during their transition to new homes. This collaboration with non-governmental organizations aims to implement income-generating programs to support the relocated families, consisting of 37 households from Nabavatu Village, who have faced substantial hardships.

This housing initiative addresses not only the immediate need for stable housing but also signifies a broader commitment from the Fijian government to enhance disaster resilience and improve living conditions in at-risk communities. The project represents an investment of approximately $5.9 million from the Relocation of Communities Trust Fund, bringing hope to families eager for a more stable future. As construction continues, the resilience and unity of the Nabavatu community are highlighted, showcasing their strength as they navigate through past adversities towards a brighter tomorrow.
