Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, recently underscored the critical need for empowering women in leadership roles, particularly in education and science, as a cornerstone for national development. Addressing a panel discussion organized by the Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific, Kiran emphasized that inclusive leadership is essential for achieving sustainable futures across the Pacific region.
The event, which focused on “Leadership and Gender Equity for Sustainable Futures,” brought together academics and advocates to explore strategies designed to boost the representation of women in leadership, especially within the traditionally male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Kiran reaffirmed the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to this initiative, asserting that promoting women’s leadership can fortify community resilience and strength.
“Enhancing women’s leadership is not just about equality — it’s about effectiveness. Sustainable development in Fiji and the Pacific relies on inclusive decision-making that harnesses everyone’s talents and experiences,” Kiran stated. She highlighted key governmental frameworks such as the Fiji Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan (2025–2030) and Gender-Responsive Planning and Budgeting as vital to the country’s long-term strategy for integrating women’s leadership into national agendas.
Kiran expressed appreciation for the pivotal roles of both universities in advancing the dialogue on gender and leadership. She affirmed the government’s dedication to fostering environments that empower women across educational institutions, workplaces, and communities, allowing them to lead confidently and effect meaningful change.
