The Fijian Government is taking swift action to address traffic congestion in the Suva–Nausori corridor. As outlined by Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau, immediate traffic management solutions are being implemented while also planning for long-term infrastructure improvements. A special joint committee has been established, consisting of key enforcement and infrastructure agencies, to identify effective strategies aimed at alleviating the heavy peak-hour traffic that plagues thousands of commuters.
Congestion is especially problematic during school terms, particularly between 6 am and 8 am, when traffic jams are intensified by school drop-offs and concurrent work commutes. To alleviate these pressures, the government is set to introduce designated bus stops, reducing disruptions caused by buses on the roadway.
Furthermore, the government is considering staggered start times and flexible working hours as a means to distribute traffic flow more evenly during the morning rush. This approach may lead to coordinated schedule adjustments among civil servants and local schools, aimed at easing the burden on the roads.
On a broader scale, officials are exploring significant infrastructure upgrades, including a potential ferry service linking Nausori and Suva. However, the success of this ferry service hinges on the development of new jetty facilities and complementary infrastructure. Feasibility studies are also being conducted to explore necessary road enhancements, such as widening critical road sections and improving feeder routes, to facilitate alternative access and reduce congestion on the main corridor.
Minister Tuisawau highlighted that the combination of these immediate solutions and long-term plans signifies a dedicated effort to improve traffic conditions and enhance the commuting experience for the community. This proactive stance reflects the government’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges sustainably, paving the way for brighter commutes ahead.
