Fiji Aims to Close Transport Accessibility Gaps for People with Disabilities

Investment in disability inclusion has seen notable increases; however, significant barriers to accessibility for individuals with disabilities persist in public spaces and transportation. A recent study conducted by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities revealed a concerning statistic: only 23 percent of transport facilities nationwide meet accessibility standards. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has taken a firm stand on the necessity of addressing these issues.

Kiran emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with the Fiji Roads Authority to enhance safety for wheelchair users and individuals with visual impairments. She reaffirmed the principle that accessibility is a fundamental right, which should be available to everyone across the nation. “Accessibility is not a privilege; it’s a right and it must extend to every corner of the country,” she stated.

Progress is being made, as initial accessibility works have commenced in areas such as Saraswati and jetties, with more comprehensive projects slated for airports and seaports. While major airports have seen visible improvements, Kiran noted that smaller airstrips and ports require substantial upgrades to foster inclusivity and meet standards expected by users.

This challenge is compounded by additional statistics indicating that about 50% of infrastructure projects in Fiji do not currently accommodate the needs of individuals living with disabilities. Acknowledging these barriers, the government is also launching initiatives aimed at enhancing transportation accessibility through coordinated efforts and funding, which has nearly doubled in recent years.

These forward-looking steps are aimed at building a society that grants equal opportunities for all citizens, showcasing a growing awareness and commitment to disability rights within Fiji. With the continuing efforts of government agencies, community organizations, and stakeholders, there is a significant promise for a more inclusive future where individuals with disabilities can engage fully and participate meaningfully in community life.
