As Fiji gears up for the Commonwealth Games set to take place in July, preparations for the nation’s swimming contingent are ramping up. With a total quota of eight athletes allocated for representation—four male and four female—the competition to secure these coveted spots is intensifying.

To determine which swimmers will don the national colors in Glasgow, athletes are showcasing their skills at national meets, including the Grand Prix and Open Nationals. Recent Grand Prix events held at the Damodar National Aquatic Centre in Suva on January 31 and the most recent Saturday have served as crucial platforms for aspiring swimmers.

National coach Willie Elaisa has noted that younger swimmers are beginning to make their presence felt at these meets. “The younger ones, I can see them making their way up,” he remarked. He emphasized that the journey to succeed at the Commonwealth Games is long and requires commitment. “Those who are serious about going to Glasgow, you will almost notice the standout swimmers,” he added.

Elaisa is optimistic about the future of Fiji’s swimming program, highlighting the importance of collective effort from coaches, administrators, and athletes. “Our jobs are to encourage our athletes to think that anything is possible,” he said, drawing a parallel to the mindset of the national rugby sevens team, who often leave the nation expecting victory.

This spirit of determination and unity among coaches and athletes strengthens the hope that Fiji’s swimmers can achieve notable success in Glasgow. With rigorous selection processes underway and a strong focus on preparation, there is a growing sense of optimism regarding the potential for podium finishes at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
