The Ministry of Employment has reported receiving complaints from employers regarding local workers who are allegedly misusing sick and annual leave entitlements, which has led to a preference for hiring foreign labor. Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh acknowledged these concerns have been voiced by employers in various discussions.
Singh emphasized that addressing these issues requires collaboration from both employers and employees, stating that enhancing workplace relations and productivity is a mutual obligation. He highlighted that the Government has made efforts to make employment more appealing for local workers, including the recent increase in the minimum wage.
“At the same time, we are impressing upon employers to ensure that they also treat workers fairly,” Singh explained. He noted the importance of effective people management, acknowledging that supervisors, managers, and human resource personnel have a vital role in maintaining high productivity levels.
He stated, “I also believe that a happy worker is a productive worker,” reinforcing the idea that while productivity is essential, fair treatment and rightful remuneration must also be prioritized.
Addressing the workers, Singh reassured them that the Government is committed to ensuring their fair treatment and adequate pay. He urged employees to fulfill their responsibilities and called on employers to not “shortchange workers” by ensuring they receive all their benefits. This, he believes, is crucial in attracting and retaining a dedicated workforce.
Furthermore, Singh urged respect for the rights of foreign workers, reiterating that they are entitled to the same protections under Fiji’s laws as local workers. He underscored the importance of fair treatment for all employees, regardless of nationality, as a cornerstone of a thriving workforce.
