The Fiji Australia Business Council (FABC) and the Market Development Facility (MDF) have forged a significant partnership aimed at bolstering the export capabilities of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Fiji’s agri-food manufacturing sector. This collaboration was solidified with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by FABC President Himen Chandra and MDF Team Leader Oliver Mathieson in Suva.

The focal point of this initiative is the launch of an Agri-Food Manufacturing SME Export Accelerator Program, designed to assist aspiring Fijian businesses in tackling challenges associated with entering the Australian market. Kelera Cavuilati, the MDF Fiji Country Director, stated that this partnership will provide valuable insights and hands-on support to Fijian agri-food manufacturers, capitalizing on FABC’s established business networks.

Cavuilati highlighted the importance of successful exports, underscoring that they contribute to stronger businesses, job creation, and more resilient manufacturing value chains in Fiji. Chandra noted the partnership’s timeliness, asserting that while Fiji’s agri-food manufacturers possess substantial international competitive potential, many face hurdles related to compliance, packaging, logistics, and market access.

The program is structured to convert strategic priorities into actionable outcomes for local businesses, offering personalized learning through a combination of self-paced online modules, interactive webinars, and in-person workshops. The FABC has indicated that approximately ten scholarships will be available for SMEs, with intentions to sponsor around six to eight candidates. Applications for the first cohort are anticipated to open soon.

This strategic collaboration represents an encouraging advancement for Fiji’s agri-food manufacturers, equipping them with essential resources to successfully navigate international markets and generate economic growth in the region. This initiative is expected to create a ripple effect, enhancing not only the exporting capabilities of participating businesses but also contributing positively to Fiji’s overall economic landscape.
