The Fiji Kulas have successfully advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Oceania Qualifiers after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over the Vanuatu Women’s National Football Team at Govind Park’s 4R Stadium yesterday. With this win, Fiji joins Papua New Guinea in progressing from Group B, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final clash in New Zealand on April 12.

The match saw Fiji get off to a promising start, with Sofi Diyolowai netting the only goal of the game in the 20th minute after breaking through Vanuatu’s defense. Despite Fiji’s early lead, Vanuatu regrouped and dominated possession for much of the first half, generating several attacking opportunities, yet failing to capitalize as Fiji’s defense stood resolute. At halftime, Fiji maintained their 1-0 advantage.

The atmosphere at Govind Park was electric, with a significant turnout from Fijian supporters who passionately cheered and danced, providing a morale boost for the home team. The second half showcased an engaging display from both sides, with Vanuatu intensifying their efforts in search of an equalizer. However, Fiji remained steadfast, disrupting their opponent’s attacking rhythm and ultimately securing the victory as the game concluded.

Kulas captain Naomi Waqanidrola expressed pride in her team’s performance, emphasizing their focus on securing a win to qualify for the semis. “Our main goal was to win and get the three points to qualify,” Waqanidrola stated. “Our message to the team was to work hard and stay humble.”

The Fiji Kulas’ advance to the semi-finals highlights the growth and potential of women’s football in the region, fostering hope and excitement for the future ahead.
