Fiji is poised to enhance its cybersecurity framework significantly by signing the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime. This proactive measure aims to strengthen national laws and improve international collaboration against online threats, including child exploitation. Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Communications Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement in response to questions raised in Parliament by Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu.
Rabuka stated that Fiji has actively engaged in global discussions to combat cybercrime over the last three years, culminating in the UN treaty’s adoption last Christmas Eve. This marks the first significant criminal justice treaty in over two decades. Fiji’s commitment to safeguard human rights while tackling cyber threats is at the forefront of its participation.
As part of its implementation strategy, the government plans significant legislative reforms to ensure that national laws align with both the UN Convention and an additional protocol of the Budapest Convention, to which Fiji acceded last year. Rabuka noted that the government is receiving guidance from the Council of Europe during this process and intends to present ratification proposals before Parliament.
The signing of the UN Convention is expected to significantly bolster Fiji’s digital forensics capabilities, promote cross-border cooperation, and enhance protections for both citizens and businesses against cyber threats. Furthermore, Rabuka reaffirmed the importance of incorporating victims’ rights, as outlined in the Convention, into national policies and laws.
Fiji’s recent accomplishments, including becoming the first Pacific Island nation to sign the Second Protocol of the Budapest Convention, underscore the nation’s dedication to creating a robust cybersecurity environment and positioning itself as a regional leader against cybercrime. This development is complemented by ongoing collaborations with international partners to enhance investigators’ skills and streamline processes for rapid response to cyber incidents.
