Fiji Advances Arms Control with Melanesian Arms Trade Treaty Partnership

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific has committed to assisting Fiji in enhancing its national arms control measures. This collaboration was formalized with Cabinet approval for a new partnership announced yesterday.

The project titled “Enhancing Fiji’s Arms Control System and Supporting Melanesian Arms Trade Treaty Implementation” aims to bolster inter-agency cooperation and improve the oversight of arms-related activities within the country. Funded through the Arms Trade Treaty Voluntary Trust Fund, the initiative comes with a budget of $199,800.

This initiative not only aims to strengthen Fiji’s arms control framework but also seeks to promote greater participation from Melanesian nations in the Arms Trade Treaty, contributing to regional stability and upholding responsible arms transfer standards. Furthermore, the project will assist Fiji in fulfilling its international commitments while establishing more robust and secure systems for the monitoring and regulation of arms movements.

Overall, this partnership reflects a significant step towards enhancing regional security and responsible governance regarding arms control in Fiji and the wider Melanesian region.
